Gaming 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Grand Lisboa Casino Macau Completion: February 2007 Architect: Dennis Lau & Ng Chun Man Architects & Engineers, Hong Kong Multimedia, LED systems design: Shen Milsom & Wilke, Hong Kong Size: 108,000 square feet Designed to resemble a glowing and intricate lotus flower, the exterior of the eight-story, spherical Grand Lisboa Casino is dotted with 60,000 LED clusters that occupy about 9.5 percent of the sphere’s surface. These create a kaleidoscope of moving color that displays various scenes—from swimming koi to whirling slot machines. Shen Milsom & Wilke worked with the LED manufacturer, Daktronics, to create the intelligent lighting system, which combines outdoor lighting effects with the ability to create and display custom text messages, graphics, animations, and video images. The technology is essentially a video display system with true digital video processing. It is capable of displaying more than 4.3 trillion colors. Each circular LED “puck” is individually addressable and contains 20 LEDs (8 red, 6 green and 6 blue). The podium is made up of 12,000 triangles of different colored triangle-shaped glass with the LED pucks custom designed to fit the spaces between the pieces of glass. The building includes five floors of gaming, a sports bar and stage with live musical performances throughout the day, and six restaurants. |
