The Hotel Cass, Holiday Inn Express
Chicago
Architect: Gettys, Chicago
Rear-projection entry art: Shen Milsom & Wilke, Chicago
Completion: September 2007
Size: 175 rooms
Completed by Shen Milsom & Wilke in record time (three weeks), this
unique project answered the Hotel Cass’s need for an artistic and
arresting entry area that’s in keeping with their high-tech vibe.
Located behind the reception desk, the 80-inch rear-projection “video
feature” displays a fluid series of photos that shift, pixel by pixel,
in a way that’s imperceptible to the human eye. This video art software,
by TransLumen Technologies, produces an extremely gradual change via
their proprietary algorithms and methodologies.
A standard video wall in this location would have meant visible seams
between displays and constant maintenance. A large plasma display,
meantime, was too expensive and difficult to install. High-definition
video was too distracting to the guests and staff. And, finally, the
install depth for the display was too shallow for typical
rear-projection units.
The final design solved all of the project’s challenges to create a
memorable addition to this innovative hotel renovation.
