Blessed Sacrament Cathedral

Sacramento, CA
Size: 45,000 square feet
Completion: November 2005

Architect: Beyer Blinder Belle Architects and Planners LLP, New York City
Acoustics: Shen Milsom & Wilke, San Francisco

The Blessed Sacrament Cathedral is the spiritual heart and the symbolic center of the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento. Shen Milsom & Wilke’s San Francisco office provided acoustical consulting services throughout the $34 million restoration of the 116-year-old building.

The 1,400-seat cathedral is a modified basilica form, approximately 100 feet wide and 200 feet long. Careful ray tracing analysis and study of the focusing affect of the restored dome led to interior acoustical treatments selected to minimize detrimental “hot spots” and maintain reverberation.

The church’s 24-rank pipe organ, built by the Reuter Organ Company, was also renovated. Thanks to the balanced acoustic qualities, the organ and the choir sound rich and highly reverberant. A sound-reinforcement system, integrated into the interior columns, provides intelligible speech during sermons.

The cathedral received the 2006 AIA California Design Merit award.
