301 Mission Street

Architect: Handel Architects, San Francisco
Acoustics: Shen Milsom & Wilke, San Francisco
Developer: Millennium Partners, New York City
Size: 1.2 million square feet; hotel, residential, office, retail, parking
Completion: Early 2008

The 58-story 301 Mission Street, the fourth tallest building in the city, will feature luxury condominiums and penthouses. The building is, however, located in San Francisco's busy Financial District, directly adjacent to the noisy East Bay Transit Bus Terminal.

To make sure the building meets California's strict environmental noise standards, Shen Milsom & Wilke measured the 24-hour noise levels at ground level and at 120 feet above ground. The company then worked closely with Handel Architects to develop a curtain wall and window design--including sound-isolation laminate glass and make-up air brought in from a mullion trickle vent--to meet the noise standards.
