New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner DNA Forensics Biology Laboratory

Completion: 2006
Size: 322,000 square feet

Architect: Perkins Eastman
Multimedia, acoustics: Shen Milsom & Wilke, New York City

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City performs more DNA analyses--for solving crimes and supporting law enforcement--than any other public laboratory in the country.

Working closely with Perkins Eastman, Shen Milsom & Wilke assessed vibration levels in the labs and designed floor systems to reduce this movement--critical when scientists are working with highly sensitive equipment.

Additionally, large and powerful ventilation systems are required in laboratories to satisfy the air-change requirements. Shen Milsom & Wilke assessed these systems and established noise control criteria.

Multimedia design includes projection systems and flat-panel displays for the building’s conference center, auditorium, and teaching laboratories.
