Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Janelia Farm Research Campus

Ashburn, VA
Completion: Spring 2006
Size: 760,000 square feet

Architect: Rafael Viñoly Architects PC, New York City
Multimedia, security, telecommunications, acoustics, data center: Shen Milsom & Wilke, Washington, D.C.

This philanthropic organization's first research campus will support and promote collaborative, technology-driven biomedical research. A hotel and living quarters on the campus will house a permanent staff of 200 to 300, as well as visiting researchers. The advanced research building includes laboratories, auditorium, conference and educational facilities, communal spaces, meeting rooms, and offices.

Shen Milsom & Wilke designed extraordinary structural vibration control for ultra-sensitive laboratory equipment, as well as acoustic and vibration controls throughout the complex.

Because of the sensitive nature of much of the work and the presence of a vivarium, security work includes access control measures, surveillance, early notification of visitors, and monitoring of property boundaries.

We also provided cable infrastructure and Internet connections across campus, and a fault-tolerant 20,000 square foot data center.

Multimedia services for a 200-seat auditorium and 75-seat seminar room include presentation and audio systems, as well as recording, broadcast, and Web cast options. Conference rooms offer similar capabilities, as well as videoconferencing.
